The fourth day of the 2024 All Island Schools Athletics Championship took place yesterday (21st), at the Sugathadasa Stadium in Colombo, following the previous three days of exciting competition.
One of the highlights of the day was the setting of several new competition records, in the similar fashion of the previous days, our promising young athletes unleashing their potential on a national scale.
Firstly, Ashen Thewarapperuma, representing Gateway College Colombo, excelled in the under-14 long jump event with a remarkable leap of 6.23 meters, setting a new record. This was the third record he has set in this championship, at such a young age.
Meanwhile, GDL Achintha from St. Aloysius’ College established a new record in the under-18 boys’ 800 meters with an impressive time of 1:58.62.
Consequently, the under-20 boys’ 800 meters, Shavindu Avishka from Nattandiya Dammissara College set a new record with a time of 1:52.00 as well.
Further, Tharushi Abhisheka, who delivered an outstanding performance in the 1500 meters event, in both this meet and the recently held Senior John Tarbat Athletic Meet at the same grounds, broke the previous under-18 girls’ 800 meters record today with a time of 2:11.00.
Competition results so far:
The events for yesterday were concluded, with the fifth and final day of the championship set to take place today, the 22nd of October.
Today’s events include the 60 meters, 300 meters, 400 meters hurdles, and the 100×4 and 400×4 relays. This final day of events will no doubt be as impressive as the trajectory of the meet we have seen so far.
