Army slams several Social Media content creators over ‘false’ videos

Sri Lanka Army has refuted videos circulated on social media platforms in the past few days related to the relocation of troops.

Issuing a statement, the Army said that the videos claim that the relocation of troops from certain camps was a hasty decision, which was inaccurate.

“These relocations are part of a long-term strategic plan under the Army’s resizing and restructuring measures. Additionally, all Army activities are carried out under the supervision of the Commander of the Army, the Minister of Defence, and the Ministry of Defence, adhering to their directives and guidance,” it said.

Stating that the videos had been created by social media content creators, the Army said they contained false information intending to tarnish the Army’s reputation, undermining public trust, and inciting animosity towards the force.

“These videos have been produced without proper verification of the misleading information provided by a few individuals in the Army who have no prospects for career progression and have been shared solely to gain publicity through their social media accounts.

“Such baseless actions by a few irresponsible individuals, acting against media ethics, can be seen as an unsuccessful attempt to damage the long-standing cordial relationship between the Army and the public. Furthermore, it could potentially pose a future threat to national security if these misleading narratives are allowed to spread unchecked,” it said.

Condemning these false and harmful statements, the Army urged the public not to be misled by such misinformation.
