PM Modi praises decision to confer Classical Language status on Pali

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi has applauded the Indian Government’s decision to confer Classical Language status on Pali.

“Glad that the Indian Government’s decision of conferring Classical Language status on Pali has ignited a spirit of joy among those who believe in the thoughts of Bhagwan Buddha,” PM Modi said in a message on ‘X’.

He further expressed gratitude to the scholars and monks from different nations who took part in a special programme held in this regard in Colombo.

The ICCR’s Swami Vivekananda Cultural Centre (SVCC) in Colombo recently hosted a panel discussion on ‘Pali as a Classical Language’, welcoming India’s decision to recognise Pali as a classical language.

The event was attended by the Deputy High Commissioner of India to Sri Lanka, Dr Satyanjal Pandey and the Secretary to Sri Lanka’s Ministry of Buddha Sasana, Religious and Cultural Affairs, Ranjith Ariyaratne as chief guests.

Several leading academics in Pali and Buddhist Studies from various universities in Sri Lanka participated in the discussion.
