The Supreme Court of Sri Lanka has ordered the Fundamental Rights (FR) petition that was filed contesting the candidacy of actor-turned-politician Ranjan Ramanayake in the 2024 General Election, to be dismissed without a hearing.
Taking into consideration the preliminary objections presented by the respondents, the three-member Supreme Court bench consisting of Preethi Padman Surasena, Kumudini Wickramasinghe, and Achala Wengappuli issued the order today to dismiss the petition.
A member of an independent group contesting in the Gampaha District had filed the FR petition at the Supreme Court last week.Â
The petitioner requested the court to issue an order rejecting the nomination paper of Ranjan Ramanayake who is set to contest from the Gampaha District representing the United Democratic Voice party.
The petitioner has sought a ruling on the grounds that Ranjan Ramanayake has no right to vote or sit in Parliament.
