The Department of Meteorology has urged the public to take adequate precautions to minimize damages caused by lightning during thundershowers as the atmospheric conditions are favourable for afternoon thundershowers in most parts of Sri Lanka today.
Accordingly, showers or thundershowers will occur in most parts of the island during the evening or night. Showers may occur in the morning over the coastal areas of the Western and Southern provinces and in the Ampara and Batticaloa districts.
Heavy showers above 100 mm are likely at some places in the Western, Central, Sabaragamuwa, Uva and Southern provinces and the Kurunegala district.
Meanwhile, showers or thundershowers will occur at several places in the sea areas around the Island. Heavy showers may occur at several places in the sea areas off the coast extending from Colombo to Hambantota via Galle.
Winds will be Westerly or South-westerly in the sea areas off the coast extending from Colombo to Pottuvil via Galle and Hambantota, and variable in the other sea areas around the island. Wind speed will be 20-30 kmph.
The sea areas around the island will be slight to moderate. Temporarily strong gusty winds and very rough seas can be expected during thundershowers. (Islandnews)
