Petition against Deshabandu : SC allows President AKD’s stance

The Supreme Court of Sri Lanka has granted permission to inform the court of current President Anura Kumara Dissanayake’s stance regarding the appointment of Deshabandu Tennakoon as the Inspector General of Police (IGP).

The Supreme Court judge bench granted permission after a request was made by Additional Solicitor General Nerin Pulle for an opportunity to submit the current President’s stance.

The court also fixed for hearing the Fundamental Rights (FR) petitions filed challenging the appointment of Deshabandu Tennakoon as the IGP, on 24 February 2025.

The Attorney General was also allowed to file objections for former President Ranil Wickremesinghe, who was named as a respondent in the case in October this year.

Nine petitions were filed by several parties, including Archbishop Malcolm Cardinal Ranjith, challenging the former President’s decision to appoint Tennakoon as the IGP.

The petitioners had sought an interim order preventing Deshabandu Tennakoon from functioning as the IGP due to his past record, including his previous conviction by the Supreme Court for having violated the fundamental rights of an individual at the Mirihana Police Station in 2011. (Islandnews)
