Travel ban against Rohitha’s relative in Kandy vehicle case

The Kandy Division Crime Investigation Unit has commenced investigations to arrest a car sales dealer, who is said to be the son-in-law of former Ports and Shipping Minister Rohitha Abeygunawardena, in connection with an incident of possessing a BMW car for which parts had been illegally imported into Sri Lanka and assembled here and a Mitsubishi type jeep with no chassis number.

A brother of the suspect named Isuru Seram is married to the daughter of ex-minister Rohitha Abeygunawardena and the police have taken steps to obtain a travel ban against him yesterday (12) by reporting the facts of the matter to the Kandy Court.

The police said that they went to his house in Aniwatte several times to arrest the suspect, but he was not at home.

After obtaining the expert reports regarding the two vehicles taken into custody by the police from his house, it has been confirmed that the BMW type car in question was assembled from parts. Police said that the chassis number of the jeep has been erased and doubts have arisen as to whether it belongs to the government. These two vehicles are worth more than Rs.60 Mn.

These two vehicles were found by the police according to a notification made to 1997 on October 20. A team including Kandy Division Crime Investigation Unit OIC Chief Inspector Tilak Samaranayake is conducting further investigations on the instructions of Kandy SSP Anuruddha Bandaranaike.
