The Irrigation Department has issued an Amber alert after considerable rainfall was reported in the catchment areas of the Deduru Oya Basin as of 3:30 PM today.
The Deduru Oya reservoir is currently spilling at a discharge rate of 18,000 cubic feet per second, with the possibility of the spill discharge increasing further, the Irrigation Department said.
Authorities have warned of a potential flood risk in low-lying areas of the Deduru Oya valley. Affected aread include Wariyapola, Nikaweratiya, Mahawa, Kobeigane, Bingiriya, Pallama, Chilaw, Arachchikattuwa, and Rasnayakapura.
Residents in these areas, as well as motorists are urged to remain vigilant. (Islandnews)
