The Ministry of Finance has announced a revision to the Special Commodity Levy on Big Onions, effective from today (1st Dec) until December 31, 2024, aiming to protect local farmers while ensuring fair prices for consumers.
The Rs. 60 per kilogram commodity levy imposed on imported potatoes will remain unchanged, while the levy on imported big onions has been reduced from Rs. 30 to Rs. 10 per kilogram.
This decision follows recommendations from the Ministries of Agriculture and Trade, considering rising market prices of big onions and potential increases in vegetable prices due to seasonal demand and weather conditions.
The special commodity levies, initially imposed in October, are part of short-term measures to stabilize the market, with further policies expected in the future, the ministry said in a statement.
