Opposition Leader Sajith Premadasa told Parliament yesterday that he condemns the use of the Prevention of Terrorism Act (PTA) to hunt down social media activists.
He urged the Government to do exactly what it promised to the people and stop the suppression of social media activities.
The Opposition Leader said this during the adjournment debate on the government’s policy statement.
“We fully support programmes that are good for the country and oppose activities that are harmful to the country. We heard that the Prevention of Terrorism Act will be completely repealed by the government. But, it has already been used to deprive citizens of their freedom. Is it also fair to engage in a suppression of media using that act? This government received a lot of support in the social media sector. So why is it engaged in suppressing media activists?” Premadasa queried.
