The Nuwara Eliya Police has launched a probe into the robbery of nearly Rs. 09 million from the area’s Sri Lanka Transport Board (SLTB) bus depot.
According to the Lankadeepa newspaper, an unidentified group is reported to have murdered the security guard at the bus depot and stolen the cash that was kept to be deposited in the bank.
The Nuwara Eliya Police said the murdered security guard was an 85-year-old resident of Galpaya in Nuwara Eliya.
Preliminary investigations reveal that the security guard had been murdered and nearly Rs. 09 million that had been kept inside a cabinet at the depot had been stolen.
Investigations also reveal that the security guard had been inside his guardpost during which the suspects had attacked him on the head with a sharp weapon.
The Police further said that the officer in charge of the depot and the cashier had also been at the depot at the time of the incident, but had been asleep. (Islandnews)
