The Board of Directors of the Ceylon Electricity Board (CEB) has decided not to grant a bonus to its employees, despite a request being made by the Ceylon Electricity Employees’ Union in this regard.
The CEB’s Board of Directors points out that although the institution recorded a huge profit this year, the money has been used for loan repayments and a reduction of electricity tariffs.
The Ceylon Electricity Employees’ Union recently requested the Chairman of the CEB to take steps to provide the employee bonus before December 10, as the CEB has reached a profitable position.
Addressing a recent media briefing, the General Secretary of the Union, Ranjan Jayalal said that although the employees of the CEB did not receive a bonus for the last two years under existing governments, the bonus should definitely be given as a government-supported by their union has come to power.
However, although the Ceylon Electricity Employees’ Union, which is affiliated with the Government’s National Peoples’ Power (NPP), has requested such a bonus, the Board of Directors of the CEB has decided not to provide it.
When inquired, the Media Spokesman of the CEB, Dhanushka Parakramasinghe said that although the CEB recorded a huge profit this year, it has spent Rs. 112 billion on loan repayments to institutions including the Ceylon Petroleum Corporation (CPC).
He further said that the Rs. 41 billion remaining from the profit made by the CEB in 2024 was used to reduce electricity charges this year.
Therefore, the CEB Media Spokesman revealed that the Board of Directors has decided that a bonus cannot be given to the employees at this juncture. (Islandnews)
