AG informs Supreme Court :
Voters’ registration 2024 to be used :
The Attorney General informed the Supreme Court yesterday that the Cabinet of Ministers has instructed the Legal Draftsman’s Department to amend the laws to enable Local Government elections to be conducted using the voters’ registration in 2024, allowing new young voters to cast their votes.
Deputy Solicitor General Nirmalan Wigneswaran, representing the Attorney General, made these remarks when a fundamental rights petition seeking an order to hold the Local Government Polls using the 2024 voter list was taken up before a three-judge Bench of the Supreme Court, comprising Chief Justice Murdu Fernando, Justice Arjuna Obeyesekere and Justice Priyantha Fernando.
President’s Counsel Ali Sabry, appearing for the petitioners, requested an order to publish advertisements in newspapers in all three languages regarding this case, enabling public participation.
The petition was filed by Nihal De Silva, a member of the Desha Vimukthi Janatha Party, along with several others. The petitioners stated that holding the Local Authorities Elections proposed to be held in the year 2025 in terms of the Electoral/Parliamentary Register applicable for the year 2023 would result in a deprivation or curtailment of the franchise.
