The Consumer Affairs Authority (CAA) has filed cases against 50 shops that sold rice beyond the control price. Consumer Affairs Authority Director Asela Bandara said that the operations to arrest people who sell rice above the control price and tend to hide stocks will be expanded and legal action will be taken promptly in case of detected offences.
He informed all the traders to refrain from selling rice at high prices and said that he has commenced increasing raids during the festive season.
A fine of Rs.100,000 can be imposed for such offences in a normal business he said and that it is mandatory to display the control price. He further said that the date of manufacture must be displayed and that selling at higher prices is prohibited and that the chairman of the authority has given instructions to carry out the raids continuously and strongly.
