Indian media has reported the plight of a Sri Lankan youth, who had fled to Tamil Nadu during Sri Lanka’s civil war, fighting for citizenship recognition or repatriation.
In a recent video shared by Indian media, the youth was seen kneeling in front of the Ramanathapuram District Secretariat requesting to be repatriated to Sri Lanka, where his parents reside, as he has not been given proper identification documents to lead an ordinary life.
The video shows the youth informing a group of Police Officers that the Officer at the Ramanathapuram District Secretariat was refusing to send him back to Sri Lanka and was also not granting him any document recognizing him as an Indian citizen.
Stating that he has submitted over 10 petitions to the District Secretariat, the youth from Jaffna said he has been battling with this issue over the last 22 years.
Commenting on the matter on ‘X’, Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) MP Namal Rajapaksa offered to assist in the repatriation of a Sri Lankan youth, stating, “After years of struggle, no more youth lives should be denied a future due to the consequences of war. I am ready to assist in making any necessary arrangements.” (Islandnews)
