Two children from the same family died from an accident that took place near Pinnaduwa on the Southern Expressway.
The accident took place when the driver of a car travelling from Kottawa towards Palatuwawa on the Southern Expressway fell asleep and collided on the rear end of a lorry that was travelling in the same direction between the 100 L and 100.1 L mileposts, Police Media said.
The mother, father and two daughters of the same family who were travelling in the car were seriously injured in the accident and were admitted to the Karapitiya Hospital and the two girls died after admission.
The deceased are two girls aged 12 and 10 who are residents of Nupe in Matara and their bodies have been placed at the Karapitiya Hospital morgue. The father who is a businessman and mother who is a teacher are under treatment at the Karapitiya hospital and are reported to be in critical condition.
The accident has occurred while the family was returning home after taking medical treatment for the elder daughter for an illness from a private hospital in Narahenpita.
