SJB signs No-Confidence Motion against Speaker

Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB) today started signing a no-confidence motion against Speaker Ashoka Sapumal Ranwala, alleging that he misled the public and the government by falsely claiming to possess a doctorate.

According to the SJB, the Speaker had stated during various stages—prior to contesting elections, during the 2024 parliamentary election campaign, upon being elected to Parliament, and after assuming duties as Speaker—that he held a BSc in Chemical Engineering from the University of Moratuwa and a doctorate from Waseda University in Japan. The SJB claims he used the title “Dr.” alongside his name, which later led to public outcry and scrutiny. The motion accuses him of remaining silent and concealing the truth when these claims were questioned.

The motion cites violations of the Parliamentary Code of Conduct, specifically sections 3.6 and 5, alleging that the Speaker has breached these ethical standards. Furthermore, it accuses him of undermining public trust in Parliament, the Constitution, and other key state institutions under his leadership.

The no-confidence motion has been signed by SJB leader Sajith Premadasa, General Secretary Ranjith Madduma Bandara, Chief Opposition Whip Gayantha Karunathilaka, and MPs J.C. Alawathuwala, Ajith P. Perera, Sujith Sanjaya Perera, Chathura Galappaththi, Jagath Withana, and Harshana Rajakaruna. (NewsWire)
