The Kandy Sports Club commenced their rugby season with a bang to win on home soil last evening. They proved their all round superiority to overcome Sri Lions Sports Club by 61 points (6 goals, two tries, and 3 penalties) to 14 (2 goals) after leading 27-14 at half time in first round rugby league championship clash at Nittawela yesterday.
Both teams packed with talented ruggerites dished out a good game of rugby in the first quarter of the game, and later the Kandy SC took control of the game. Their ball handling and tackling was superb. It was the Sri Lions SC side who scored first in the sixth minute of the game but couldn’t keep it going.
In the second half too Kandy SC took control of the game and played with a superb teamwork. They rucked, drove and powered their way to a comprehensive win. The platform for their win was laid by a ferocious display by their forwards and backs. The scores for the winning side were Dilshad Fareed, Srinath Sooriyabandara, Tharinda Ratwatte, Danushka Ranjan, Chathura Soysa, Tharindu Chathuranga, Ethan Schneider Loos and Dahan Wickrmarachchi. Goal kicking was off the boot of Tarinda Ratwatte. For the Sri Lions SC Aaron Perera and Rumesh Ramadas scored the tries and the goal kicking was done by Kevin Dixon. The game was refereed by Suranga Anurashantha.
