SC to announce decision on December 31

The Supreme Court yesterday concluded the hearing and reserved its judgement for December 31 on four Fundamental Rights petitions seeking the cancellation of the Grade 5 Scholarship Examination.

A three-judge bench of the Supreme Court, comprising Justices Yasantha Kodagoda, Kumudini Wickremasinghe, and Arjuna Obeyesekere, concluded the hearing of four Fundamental Rights petitions filed by several students and their parents.

The petitions were heard over three consecutive days. The parties were directed to submit their written submissions by 9:00 am today (19).

The Attorney General had earlier informed the Supreme Court that the Cabinet of Ministers had recommended awarding three marks to each student who sat for the 2024 Grade 5 Scholarship Examination as a solution to the three leaked questions. The Attorney General further informed that the Cabinet of Ministers had further recommended to not re-conduct the Grade 5 Scholarship Examination, taking into consideration the mental stress students would undergo and the adverse effects it would have on the scheduled examination calendar.

On November 18, the Supreme Court issued an interim order preventing authorities from taking steps to release the marks and ranks of the Grade 5 Scholarship Examination held on September 15.

Saliya Pieris PC and Sanjeeva Jayawardena PC appeared for the petitioners. Solicitor General Viraj Dayaratne appeared for the Attorney General.
