Starlink, the satellite division of SpaceX owned by Elon Musk, has been granted a license to operate in Sri Lanka. However, the company has yet to submit an application for importing the equipment needed to facilitate its satellite broadband service in the country, according to a high-ranking official.
The Telecommunications Regulatory Commission of Sri Lanka (TRCSL) formally issued a telecommunications service provider license to Starlink Lanka (Private) Limited in August of this year. This license permits Starlink to deliver satellite internet services within Sri Lanka. Earlier, then-President Ranil Wickremesinghe and Elon Musk discussed the initiative during their meeting at the 10th World Water Forum in Indonesia.
Despite these developments, an official from TRCSL revealed that Starlink has not taken steps to import the required connectivity devices for customer use. The delay raises questions about the company’s awareness or consideration of Sri Lanka’s customs regulations for importing such equipment.
