Sri Lanka begin New Zealand tour with back-to-back wins against NZ XI (Scorecard)

Sri Lanka started their New Zealand tour in style, registering victories in two practice matches against the New Zealand XI. The Sri Lankans secured wins in both a T20 and a T10 game at the Bert Sutcliffe Oval on December 23.

Match 1: T20 Game

Sri Lanka showcased a dominant all-round performance to chase down New Zealand XI’s total of 94 runs with ease. Wanindu Hasaranga and Matheesha Pathirana starred with the ball, restricting the hosts to a modest score in just 13.4 overs.

In response, Sri Lanka’s top order, led by Kusal Perera and Kamindu Mendis, made light work of the chase. Mendis retired out after a blistering 32 off 23 balls, and Perera smashed 30 runs in 22 deliveries. Sri Lanka completed the chase with 7 wickets in hand and 9 balls to spare.

The second encounter, a high-paced T10 match, saw Sri Lanka continuing their winning momentum. Batting first, Sri Lanka put up a strong total of 128 runs in 10 overs. Pathum Nissanka played a scintillating knock, smashing 31 runs off just 15 balls. Kamindu Mendis  and Rajapaksa also contributed with quickfire cameos.

The New Zealand XI tried their best but fell short, managing only 96 runs for the loss of 2 wickets in their 10 overs. Thushara picked up two key wickets to ensure Sri Lanka’s 32-run victory.

Sri Lanka will play the first T20 game against New Zealand on 28th.
