Sri Lanka’s Unique Digital ID project set to start next month

Sri Lanka and India will work together to fast-track the implementation of the Sri Lanka Unique Digital Identification (SLUDI) project, the Sunday Times reported.

Foreign Minister Vijitha Herath said that a memorandum of understanding (MoU) will be signed next month to formalize the partnership, according to the report.

During President Anura Kumara Dissanayake’s recent visit to India, he expressed interest in adopting India’s successful people-focused digitalization initiatives.

The initiative will streamline access to government services, such as payments to Aswesuma beneficiaries, while reducing corruption by enabling direct transfers to recipients.

“It will be similar to India’s Aadhaar card, which has benefitted millions of people,” Minister Herath said.

The project will be led by Sri Lanka’s Digital Economic Affairs Ministry and the Information and Communication Technology Agency (ICTA), in collaboration with the Indian government. An Indian delegation is set to visit Sri Lanka next month for the commencement of the project. (Islandnews)
