One injured in Yala park elephant attack


The Gonaganaara Police said that a person was injured after being attacked by a wild elephant in the area of Sunhandiramaara, in the fourth zone of the Yala Forest Reserve, belonging to the Gonaganaara Police Division, on Thursday.

A person injured in a wild elephant attack in the Yala National Park and two others had been found after the Wildlife Conservation Assistant Officer informing the Gonaganaara Police that a person had been injured by a wild elephant attack.

These three individuals had entered the reserve on January 7 and on 8 at around 6.30 pm. One individual was injured when a wild elephant which appeared all of a sudden had attacked them.

The injured person is B.G. Pradeep Saranga (42), a resident of Middeniya, Mellaketagoda.

The other two individuals, aged 35 and 29, were residents of Middeniya, Mellaketagoda and Middeniya, Medawatte.
The injured has been admitted to Debarawewa Hospital by the Gonaganaara Police, while the other two individuals have been arrested by the police on suspicion. Gonaganaara Police OIC Wasantha Bandara is conducting investigations.
