Two soldiers from the Sri Lanka Army Special Task Force and two others, including a district manager of an insurance company, were arrested yesterday (18) by Jaffna Police for allegedly extorting Rs. 3 million from a gold shop owner in Jaffna.
The suspects, aged between 39 and 50, are residents of Mahaiyawa, Katugastota, Baddegama, and Manikhinna. Police recovered approximately Rs. 2 million of the stolen money from the suspect, according to the Lankadeepa newspaper.
On January 16, the suspects had reportedly entered the gold shop in the Kasturiya area of Jaffna, claiming to be officers from the Terrorism Investigation Division. They presented a fake warrant and accused the shop owner of possessing gold looted by the LTTE. They then coerced the owner into handing over Rs. 3 million, stating the gold needed to be transported to Colombo for submission to court, before fleeing the scene.
