Sri Lankan Chicken exports for China : Minister gives details

Sri Lanka has entered into an agreement for direct exports of poultry products to the Chinese Market, marking a breakthrough for the local poultry industry.

Addressing the media yesterday, Foreign Minister Vijitha Herath said that the agreement was one among the 15 signed during President Anura Kumara Dissanayake’s recent visit to China.

Providing details of the agreement, he said Sri Lanka will be allowed to directly export chicken heads and feet, a by-product of its meat processing industry, to China.

“This agreement will help the economy to boost its foreign exchange revenue. The government secured the deal as it was a request made by the poultry industry. The industry can immediately start, subject to certifications and buyers,” Minister Herath said.

Prior to the President’s visit to China, the Cabinet of Ministers approved the proposal presented by the Minister of Agriculture and Livestock to sign the relevant protocol related to the export of chicken to the Chinese market.

At the time, the Cabinet said a proposal was forwarded to examine, quarantine, and sign an agreement prepared for health requirements concerning the relevant procedure between the two countries to carry out the export of chicken to China from Sri Lanka with the mediation of the General Administration of Customs of China.
