The Sri Lankan government does not intend to continue the position of Chief of Defence Staff (CDS) following the retirement of General Shavendra Silva, according to Secretary to the Defence Ministry retired Air Vice Marshal Sampath Thuyacontha.
The CDS is the highest-ranking military officer in Sri Lanka, outranking the service commanders of the Army, Navy, and Air Force.
However, the position does not hold direct operational command over the forces but serves to coordinate inter-service operations and joint military strategies.
With General Silva’s retirement marking the end of an illustrious career, the government has reportedly decided not to appoint a successor, effectively abolishing the position. (Islandnews)
