The Ceylon Electricity Board (CEB) or its subsidiaries will not be sold, Energy Minister Kumara Jayakody has stated.
Speaking during an inspection visit to the Norochcholai Power Plant, the minister said that the government considers these institutions vital national assets and will retain full ownership and control over them.
“Even before coming to power, we have always opposed the sale of these institutions, and that stance remains unchanged,” the Minister said, stressing that the government must maintain authority over the energy sector to ensure national security and stability.
The minister clarified that while private sector involvement will be permitted in electricity generation, distribution, and maintenance, the CEB will remain 100% state-owned, and no shares will be transferred to private entities.
He assured that the future of the CEB, its employees, and their job security would be safeguarded.
Jayakody also spoke of the importance of the Norochcholai Power Plant, which contributes nearly 40% of the country’s electricity demand, highlighting the need for proper maintenance and efficient operations to ensure uninterrupted power supply.
The Minister also praised the management and workforce for their efforts, assuring the CEB and the job security of its employees would be safeguarded. (Islandnews)
