The Supreme Court has scheduled the hearing of former President Mahinda Rajapaksa’s Fundamental Rights petition, challenging the reduction of his security detail, for March 19.
Rajapaksa filed the petition contesting the government’s decision to reduce his security without conducting a comprehensive security assessment.
The petition named Prime Minister Harini Amarasuriya, the Cabinet of Ministers, and several others as respondents.
In his filing, Rajapaksa argues that he continues to face terrorist threats due to his role in ending the decades-long conflict with the LTTE.
In December, the security detail assigned to former presidents was reduced to 60 personnel following a review by Acting Inspector General of Police (IGP).
As part of this decision, 116 police officers previously assigned to Rajapaksa’s security were transferred with immediate effect. (Islandnews)
