A 36-year-old Canadian woman was arrested at Bandaranaike International Airport (BIA) while attempting to smuggle hashish worth approximately Rs. 360 million, Sri Lanka Customs said. Officials described it as the largest hashish seizure at the airport to date.
The suspect arrived in Sri Lanka from Toronto via Abu Dhabi. Customs officers, acting on international intelligence, discovered 36.5 kilograms of hashish concealed in bed sheets inside her luggage. Authorities believe the drugs were intended for re-export.
The woman, reportedly a long-term drug user, was handed over to the Police Narcotics Bureau for further investigation. Officials are examining potential links to international drug trafficking networks. (Islandnews)
