Laws violated in vehicle imports? SLAAJ calls for investigation

The Sri Lanka Automobile Association in Japan (SLAAJ) has raised concerns over alleged violations of vehicle import regulations and has urged authorities to take strict action against non-compliant imports.

In a letter to the Controller General of the Department of Imports and Exports Control, SLAAJ highlighted discrepancies in the application of Operating Instructions No: IECD/6/4/002/2024 regarding vehicle manufacturing dates.

The association said that pre-shipment inspection (PSI) agencies in Japan—JAAI, Bureau Veritas, and JEVIC—only verify the manufacturing year, not the exact month and date.

SLAAJ alleged that certain exporters have manipulated this process by pressuring PSI agencies to include unverified manufacturing months, allowing ineligible 2022-manufactured vehicles to be imported into Sri Lanka.

“However, we have received multiple complaints from our members regarding certain exporters who have shipped vehicles manufactured in 2022 and have allegedly pressured PSI agents to include a specific month of production—a detail provided solely by the exporter and not verified through official sources. This practice not only violates the legal requirements set forth by the Sri Lankan government but also creates an unfair advantage for certain importers while undermining ethical business practices,” the association said in the letter.

SLAAJ called for a thorough investigation and strict enforcement of regulations to ensure fair trade practices. (Islandnews)
