The Vavuniya High Court has sentenced SDIG of the Sabaragamuwa Province, Lalith Jayasinghe to four years of rigorous imprisonment.
The sentence was issued when the case regarding aiding the escape of Mahalingam Shashikumar, also known as Swiss Kumar, the prime suspect in the murder of a schoolgirl in Jaffna, was taken up for hearing today.
SDIG Lalith Jayasinghe is accused of helping Swiss Kumar evade arrest in the case over the rape and murder of Sivaloganathan Vithiya, a controversial incident reported in 2015.
Senior Government Advocate Nishanth Nagaratnam led the prosecution in this case.
Sivaloganathan Vithiya, an 18-year-old Sri Lankan schoolgirl, was gang raped and murdered on the island of Pungudutivu in northern Sri Lanka in May 2015.
Mahalingam Sasikumar or Swiss Kumar, the main suspect in the murder was caught by villagers in Pungudutivu and was handed over to the Police.
However, SDIG Lalith Jayasinghe was accused of arranging for Mahalingam Sasikumar or Swiss Kumar’s release. (Islandnews)
