SC to hear petitions against Deshabandu in May

The Supreme Court of Sri Lanka has decided to hear nine petitions filed against the appointment of Deshabandu Tennakoon as the Inspector General of Police (IGP).

Accordingly, a five-judge bench of the Supreme Court will hear 09 Fundamental Rights petitions challenging Deshabnadu Tennakoon’s appointment, which allege that it violates the Constitution.

The FR petitions will be taken up for hearing on May 6, 7 and 8.

Nine petitions were filed by several parties, including Archbishop Cardinal Malcolm Ranjith, challenging former President Ranil Wickremesinghe’s decision to appoint Tennakoon as the IGP.

The petitioners had sought an interim order preventing Deshabandu Tennakoon from functioning as the IGP due to his past record, including his previous conviction by the Supreme Court for having violated the fundamental rights of an individual at the Mirihana Police Station in 2011. (Islandnews)
