The women’s marathon world record will be renewed

Ruth Chepngetich

Kenyan athlete Ruth Chepngetich managed to renew the world record in the women’s marathon event today (13).

Chepngetich, who took part in the Bank of America Chicago Marathon today in Chicago, clocked 2:09.56 hours, nearly two seconds off the world record of 2.11.53 hours previously set by Ethiopia’s Tigist Assefa for the event. It was noted as a success to bring forward.

This was a mixed marathon and she finished the race as the tenth (first woman) among all the competitors who participated in the competition.

Kenya’s John Korir managed to win the men’s event of this competition by recording a time of 2.02.43 hours.

Ruth Chepngetich had previously completed the same race in 2022 with a time of 2.14.18 hours, which was recorded as her personal best till date.

However, with her performance today, Ruth Chepngetich also became the first woman to finish the women’s marathon in under two hours and 10 minutes.

She also mentioned that after completing the race, she will dedicate her record to Kenyan marathon champion Kelvin Kiptum who passed away prematurely.

“I dedicate this world record to Kelvin Kiptum”

A year ago in Chicago, Kelvin Kiptum broke the world record in the men’s marathon event, shortly after he met with a car accident and died prematurely. However, his record still lives on.
