The Navy men’s team showcased an impressive performance, securing the runners-up position in the Eagles Cup Handball Challenge Trophy after hardfought final with Sri Lanka Army, This event was hosted by Sri Lanka Air Force for the third time which ended at the Sugathadasa Indoor Stadium in Colombo. The Air Force Commander Air Marshal Udeni Rajapaksa was the chief guest at the awards ceremony .
The men’s finals of the tournament, featuring nine competing teams, saw the Army and Navy teams battling for victory. In a nail-biting final match that ended with a close score of 41-40, the Navy team secured the runner-up position and Army won the champions title.
Leading Seaman WACP Wijendra, representing the Navy Handball team, secured the trophy for the Best Attacker in the competition while M.WAP Weerasinghe and T.M.P.K Thillekaratne both from Army won Best Goal Keeper and Best Defensive Player awards. K.M.R Gunwardena of Army was adjudged the Best Player of the men’ s tournament.
Meanwhile in the Women’s final Sri Lanka Air Force defeated Sri Lanka Army to take the championship.
M.S Munidasa, P.I.D.S Fernando and W.P Erandi all from Air Force won Best Attacker, Best Goal Keeper and Best Defensive player awards while A.P.R Nirmani from champion Air Force team was adjudged player of the tournament.
This tournament saw 9 men’s teams and 6 women’s team and majority of the team players from the tri services, local clubs as well as school level handball clubs.
