Two suspected gunmen linked to a fatal shooting in Kotahena were killed by police gunfire late Friday, authorities said.
According to Police Media Spokesperson Buddhika Manthununga, the incident began around 9 p.m. when a 38-year-old man, Shashi Kumara, was shot at a mobile phone shop on Kotahena Street. Two individuals on a motorcycle carried out the attack before fleeing. The victim was taken to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
Police pursued and apprehended the suspects, seizing their motorcycle and the firearm allegedly used in the attack. Later that night, officers took the suspects to another location after receiving information about a concealed weapon. There, the suspects attempted to fire at police, prompting officers to return fire. Both suspects sustained injuries and died at the hospital.
A police constable was injured in the incident and is receiving treatment at Colombo National Hospital. Investigations are ongoing. (NewsWire)
