A video of this morning’s Hulftsdorp courtroom shooting shows police and security personnel standing by without rushing the victim to the hospital.
The video circulating in social media shows the victim, underworld kingpin Ganemulla Sanjeewa, lying on the floor of the witness box, with a gunshot injury visible on his chest.
Amid the commotion, a number of security personnel are seen observing the situation and discussing details, but taking no effort to help the victim.
“There’s nobody to see if this man is alive — he was breathing. But no one is checking,” one person can be heard commenting in the video.
The victim, who was later transported to receive medical treatment, was pronounced dead at the National Hospital in Colombo. It remains unclear as to how long the security personnel took to transport the victim to the hospital, and if he was alive at the time.
Meanwhile a social media user had questioned as to why there were no emergency equipment such as a stretcher or an ambulance on standby at the court complex. “It’s 2025, and Sri Lankan courts don’t even have a medical centre, a stretcher or an ambulance on standby, and the Police have zero basic medical training while even supermarkets in other countries have AED’s on standby. Ridiculous,” the post said.
