A 70-year-old driver miraculously escaped death after lorry carrying over 30 tonnes of dolomite crashed into the guard rail of the Southern Expressway near the Kahathuduwa entrance yesterday morning.
Expressway Traffic Police officer said that the lorry carrying 600 bags of dolomite, each weighing 50 kilos, had overturned three times before falling onto a slope of above 30 feet. However, the driver had sustained only minor injuries to his left leg.
The dolomite was being transported from Matale to Elpitiya when the accident occurred and extensive damage was caused to the railings.
Police said the lorry driver had told them that he had not slept properly for three nights. Only the driver was in the lorry at the time of the accident. He is a resident of the Matale area.
