EC asks police to act on errant candidates


The Election Commission has commenced handing over information to Police of candidates who contested the 2024 General Election but have failed to submit their income and expenditure reports. Election Commission Chairman R. M. A. L. Rathnayake said yesterday (2) that information of candidates who failed to submit their income and expenditure reports by the set deadline have commenced being handed over to the Police at district level.

The Election Commission Chairman further said that the process of handing over the files to the Police of candidates who failed to submit their election income and expenditure reports by the District level Election Returning Officers is currently underway.

The Election Commission Chairman said that accordingly, the Provincial Deputy Inspector Generals of Police (DIGs) will be handling the filing of cases on the candidates who failed to submit their income and expenditure reports in Court.

Previously, the Election Commission announced that legal action will be taken against all candidates who failed to submit their election income and expenditure reports by the set deadline.
