Fake or not : CID inquiry over alleged letter by Ranil

The Criminal Investigation Department (CID) has informed Colombo Fort Magistrate Nilupuli Lankapura that an investigation has been launched into a letter allegedly bearing the signature of former President Ranil Wickremesinghe, which was sent to security agencies.

The letter reported to have contained a special directive allowing a smuggler operating in the Southern Province to continue illegal activities. It was allegedly addressed to former IGP C.D. Wickramaratne, the then-Defence Secretary, and the Presidential Secretary. The CID is probing whether the letter is genuine or forged, it was reported.

The document was reportedly sent via the Matara Post Office, and former IGP Wickramaratne has also ordered an internal probe into the matter.

The Magistrate has instructed investigators to determine the authenticity of the letter and submit a report to the court. (Islandnews)
