Former Western Provincial Council member Sulochana Gamage and another businessman, arrested and remanded over allegations of accepting a bribe of Rs. 09 million, have been released on bail.
The Colombo Magistrate’s Court today (Jan 24) ordered the two suspects to be released on two surety bails of Rs. 500,000 each and cash bails of Rs. 25,000 each.
Colombo Chief Magistrate Thanuja Lakmali further imposed overseas travel bans on the duo and fixed the case for hearing on 20 June 2025.
Sulochana Gamage and another businessman were arrested by the Bribery Commission while accepting a Rs. 09 million bribe from another businessman in Pita Kotte on 28 December 2024.
According to the Bribery Commission, the duo were arrested based on a complaint lodged by a resident of the Madiwela area of Kotte, after which they were remanded.Â
It is reported that the bribe had been solicited on the promise of expediting compensation for a plot of land on Torrington Avenue, which had been acquired by the Urban Development Authority (UDA). (Islandnews)
