Jewels 2024’ International Gems and Jewelry Trade Exhibition and Competition was held in Colombo and Deputy Minister of Industries and Entrepreneurship Development Chathuranga Abeysinghe was the Chief Guest.
Although the gems and jewellery sector is an industry that can earn a lot of foreign exchange, due to the lack of proper accreditation in our country, this valuable industry is not functioning up to its true potential. “Technical issues, government tax problems, obstacles caused by the government machinery have become an obstacle to the development of this industry. The current government’s target is to remove all these hurdles soon and generate USD 3 billion export revenue from this industry. The SME sector too could play a key role in this sector. with current resources and the country’s geographical location we can also convert Sri Lanka to an international gem hub.” (SS)
