GMOA raises concerns over duty allowance reduction in budget

The Government Medical Officers’ Association (GMOA) has raised concerns over salary revisions proposed in Budget 2025, despite welcoming the government’s efforts to strengthen Sri Lanka’s free health service.

In a statement, the GMOA acknowledged the record Rs. 604 billion allocation for the health sector and Rs. 185 billion for medical supplies. It also praised the government’s move to digitize the drug procurement process and expand primary healthcare services.

However, the GMOA expressed strong dissatisfaction over the reduction of the extra duty allowance for doctors. It noted that while basic salaries have been increased, the decision to cut the hourly rate of extra duty allowance by 50% and reduce holiday allowances has resulted in financial losses for medical professionals.

The association warned that these cuts could demoralize doctors and worsen the ongoing brain drain, ultimately affecting patient care. The GMOA has requested an urgent discussion with the President and the Health Minister to address their concerns, warning that failure to resolve the issue could lead to trade union action.
