The Government of Sri Lanka re-affirmed its commitment to the One China policy, emphasising its support for China’s sovereignty and territorial integrity. During this week’s Cabinet meeting held on Monday, the Cabinet of Ministers reiterated that the country would continue to adhere to this long-standing policy, which recognises the People’s Republic of China as the sole legitimate government of China.
In a statement issued by the Government Information Department, the Government clarified its position on the matter, stating, “Our nation remains firmly committed to the One China policy.
We recognise that Taiwan is an integral part of China and oppose any attempts to undermine China’s sovereignty or territorial unity.
The policy, which has been a cornerstone of diplomatic relations with China, was first adopted decades ago as part of efforts to strengthen bilateral ties. Accordingly, the Cabinet of Ministers has granted its consent to the proposal forwarded by Foreign Affairs, Foreign Employment and Tourism Minister Vijitha Herath that the Sri Lankan Government will continue to follow the said policy and act accordingly.
