Health experts warn of increase in gum disease among senior citizens

Consultant Dental Surgeon Nilantha Ratnayake says there is an increase in gum disease among senior citizens of Sri Lanka.

Addressing the media, Dr. Nilantha Ratnayake said that over 50% of senior citizens suffer from gum disease.

Dr. Nilantha Ratnayake said the disease could be avoided if the public could identify initial symptoms.

“The first symptom is bleeding of the gums. But, people are unable to identify this due to the use of toothpaste. I advise people to brush their teeth without toothpaste at least once a month to see if their gums are bleeding,” he said.

Dr. Nilantha Ratnayake advised the public to seek medical attention if their gums tend to bleed during this process. (Islandnews)
