Imesha Arundhini’s header leads Sri Lanka to a historic victory

Sri Lanka recorded an outstanding victory over the Maldives in their opening game in the SAFF Women’s Championship 2024, beating the Maldives one goal to nil at the Dashrath Stadium in Kathmandu.

The Sri Lankan women displayed great control of the game from the very start. The dynamic wingers were quick and alert, ready to seize every opportunity that came their way.

With the pure dominance shown by the Golden Army, they had the opportunity in the 15th minute of the game to score the opening goal of the game breaking the deadlock. Debutant Imessha Anuradhini found the back courtesy of a brilliant delivery into the box by Sri Lanka’s star player Praveena Perera.

With the advantage in their hands, the Sri Lankan girls showed significant improvement, consistently maintaining possession and creating continuous attacking threats in the opposition’s half.

Despite showing significant improvement going forward the Sri Lankan girls could not get past the Maldivian goalkeeper Aminath Leeza. She was solid between the posts, consistently stopping the threats that came her way.

The lack of creativity in the final third also held back Sri Lanka from doubling their lead.

Sri Lanka is set to meet the strong Nepal side on the 21st of October at the same venue.
