A major security failure unfolded at the Hulftsdorp Court Complex this morning when a gunman disguised as a lawyer opened fire inside the high-security premises, targeting underworld kingpin Ganemulla Sanjeewa, who later succumbed to his injuries.
According to police sources, the suspect, posing as a lawyer, had been seated at the lawyers’ table before suddenly opening fire at Ganemulla Sanjeewa as he entered the court dock for a hearing regarding his remand status. The assailant managed to flee the scene immediately after the attack, prompting a massive manhunt by law enforcement.
Ganemulla Sanjeewa, who sustained critical injuries, was rushed to the Colombo National Hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.
The notorious underworld figure was arrested upon his return from Nepal at the Bandaranaike International Airport (BIA) in Katunayake on September 13, 2023. He was initially detained under Prevention of Terrorism Act (PTA) orders and later transferred to Boossa Prison on the directives of the Gampaha Magistrate’s Court.
At the time of the shooting, prison officials had escorted him to court for legal proceedings. The incident has raised serious concerns over security lapses within the court complex, which is one of the most heavily guarded judicial premises in the country.
The police have launched a large-scale search operation to track down and apprehend the suspect, who remains at large. Investigations are ongoing. (Islandnews)
