MCC on Public Security : 3 key updates

During the first meeting of the Ministerial Consultative Committee on Public Security and Parliamentary Affairs, the Acting Inspector General of Police stated that underworld activities are primarily linked to the drug trade. He noted that diplomatic efforts are underway to identify and apprehend individuals directing these operations from overseas and bring them back to the country.

The committee also discussed a request for enhanced security for Opposition Members of Parliament. Public Security Minister Ananda Wijepala said no final decision had been made, as investigations into potential threats were ongoing. He added that necessary security measures would be implemented once assessment reports were completed.

Additionally, when Opposition Leader Sajith Premadasa raised concerns about a possible reduction in police officers’ salaries under the proposed budget, the minister assured that while budget reductions were planned, no officer’s salary would be decreased, and salary increments would be maintained.
