A police constable attached to the Mount Lavinia Police Station has fled with a firearm and several rounds of ammunition.
According to the police, the constable had taken the firearm and 30 rounds of ammunition when he was supposed to leave for a roadblock duty last night (08).
However, as he failed to report for duty at the roadblock, an investigation was launched to locate him. Attempts to contact him via his mobile phone were unsuccessful.
Subsequent investigations revealed that the suspect officer had left the country for Dubai from the Katunayake International Airport last night.
Accordingly, the police stated that necessary measures are being taken through Interpol to bring the suspect police officer back to Sri Lanka.
The firearm in his possession has not yet been recovered, and further investigations are underway. (NewsWire)
