No intention to curb media freedom – Minister

The current government is fully committed to protect media freedom, Health and Media Minister Dr. Nalinda Jayatissa said.

Speaking at a special media briefing held at the Government Information Department yesterday (3), the minister emphasised that the government provides journalists with the highest opportunities to inform the public and has no intention of curbing press freedom in any form.

He further stated that the government is committed to safeguarding freedom of speech and democracy at the highest level. However, he warned against the misuse of media platforms for malicious purposes, such as promoting hatred or furthering personal, business or political agendas.

The minister noted that the government reserves the right to take action in such instances to protect the interests of the public. Minister Jayatissa stressed that the safety and well-being of the Sri Lankan people remain the government’s top priority. He also affirmed the commitment to safeguarding national unity, territorial integrity and social harmony.

He highlighted that spreading false or distorted news for ulterior motives would be met with legal action, as it undermines national stability.

“At a time when the country is beginning to recover, any attempt to destabilise the nation is a betrayal to the country,” the minister remarked.
