November 14 Election date : SC rejects Petition

The petition challenging the National Election Commission’s decision to hold the 2024 Parliamentary Election on November 14 was dismissed by the Supreme Court of Sri Lanka today.

The petition was filed seeking an order from the court that the decision by the Election Commission to hold the General Election on November 14 violated the Constitution.

The Supreme Court of Sri Lanka today dismissed the petition without taking it up for consideration.

In October, Priyantha Herath, the convenor of the ‘Api Sri Lanka’ organization filed the Fundamental Rights petition asserting that the necessary procedures stipulated in the Parliamentary Elections Act have been violated.

The petition claimed that authorities did not properly call for nominations or set the election date according to legal provisions.

However, Election Commission General Saman Ratnayake had previously dismissed claims on social media that the election date was unconstitutional.

“Nomination ends on October 11th, and the law states that from that date, including the day of nominations, there must be a five-week interval. This date is correct,” Ratnayake said, responding to concerns over the election date. (Islandnews)
